Welcome to a new school year at St. Edward Catholic School. Education and formation in faith involves much more than acquiring knowledge or ability which can be used or set aside. It is a question of acquiring life itself, a life that is worth living and is capable of lasting forever. “This is eternal life, that they know you to only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:3) Faith is life because it is a relationship. To receive the Gospel is to receive and enter into a relationship with a person, the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus saves us and brings us life not simply as individuals but as members of his body, making us part of a communion of life and love. Christian faith is not possible without the Church to whom the Lord has entrusted his paschal mystery. We receive him and share his love, love which reveals itself in action. It is first God who extended his hand to us and teaches us in turn to extend our hand to others. This year the Catholic Parish of St. Edward focuses its attention on the recent encyclical teaching of Pope Benedict XVI. It is our hope that in participating in the life of our parish and school all of us may enter more deeply into the experience of God’s love promised in this great teaching. Fr. Jeffrey Keyes, C. PP.S.
